“I didn’t almost get caught in school because of a buzzing pocket or glancing at my phone. I didn’t stand in a corner with my phone in my youth group. I didn’t hole myself up in the girls toilets at break. I didn’t check my messages every five minute only to be disappointed when I saw none.
Instead I SOCIALIZED.
Social media.
In reality it’s an unsocial media.”
My daughter (known as Thing I in these pages) has begun a daily series of blog posts beginning yesterday looking at how she copes with sacrificing social media for forty days. Apart from writing up each post and publishing, she has given up laptops, mobile phones, internet, Facebook, Twitter – the lot.
You can imagine this would be difficult for most of us and agonising for teenagers but what makes me proud of her is that this is also her lifeline back to her friends in Bangladesh. We’re in our fifth month back in the UK and we all still find it so hard to be aware from our loved ones there in a country we adored. For my daughter this has been especially traumatic so to take a break from those who know her best is very brave.
Please take a look at her writing (which seems to be universally thought well of – and not just by her doting old dad too!) and spur her on with encouraging comments (She has permission to reply to them too). On day one she is taking a poll too which you can give a second to answering. It’s hard on her but she is finding the positives.
